AIM Viruses

I have gotten tired of having to tell many different people multiple times what do do if the get an AIM virus, so I decided to make this handy dandy page to tell you, step by step, what to do.

Symptoms of an IM virus:
You send IMs to everyone on you buddy list saying something like “Check out this myspace pic:-D www.myspace.com” but “www.myspace.com” actually links to something like www.example.com/hello.exe. You can tell where a link actually points to by hovering you mouse over the link and either looking at the bubble balloon, or the status bar(depending on where you are). Try here–> www.myspace.com.
Do not open a link that ends in the extensions .exe .scr, .dos, .pif, .dll.
ex: “hello.exe”
Pictures most often have the extensions: .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .bmp.
If an IM claims to be sending you a picture but does not have one of the above picture extentions BE WARY!

If you have any of the above symptoms, or any listen here, you most likely have an IM virus and should follow the following steps to remove it.

NOTE: A am simply a guy trying to help out. I am not liable for any damage (although unlikely) that may occur by flowing these steps.

First, alert anyone you may have sent a virus link IM to of what has happened, if they have clicked the link, tell them to go here and follow these directions also.
Second, SIGN OFF AIM as to prevent you from sending other virus IMs.
Third, if you have a anti-virus program such as Norton, McAfee, or N-Secure, etc, update your software and then run a full system scan. If you have a spyware detecting program such as SpySweeper, Ad-aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Windows Defender, etc. update and run that as well. (free security and spyware removal programs can be found here <http://www.download.com/Best-free-security-and-spyware-software/1200-2023_4-5163183.html>
Forth, if those programs turn up empty, try running them again in safe mode. To start your computer in safe mode hold down the F8 key as you are starting you computer, and select safe mode when prompted.
Fifth, if no results are still returned, try running the program called AIMfix. Note: This is not my program and I am not responsible for anything done by this program. I do believe it to be safe and have heard it solving many AIM virus related problems without a hitch. AIM fix can be downloaded here < http://jayloden.com/aimfix.htm>.
